Yes, the old .doc format works
Word's .doc goes back to the nineties, and plenty of finished manuscripts still live in it. Upload one and it's converted to modern Word format on the way in — the Chapters step tells you it happened — then read like any manuscript: chapters detected, italics and images kept, the title page and copyright page recognized for what they are.
One tip for the most faithful result: if you still have Word (or free LibreOffice), open the file and save it as .docx first. A modern save carries heading styles and footnotes more reliably than any conversion after the fact.
Not a bare conversion — a typeset book
