The honest comparison
If you need to shuffle your personal library between formats, keep using Calibre — it's free, venerable and excellent at that job. But a format conversion is not a book design: Calibre's output carries your Word file's styling into an EPUB shell, and it doesn't produce a print interior at all.
doc2epub starts where a converter stops. It re-typesets the manuscript — chapter openers, drop caps, front and back matter, running heads, real typography — and produces both publishing deliverables: an EPUB validated with epubcheck, and a print-ready PDF interior with mirrored margins and KDP's gutter math, something Calibre was never built to make.
When to use which
Reading your own collection on a different device: Calibre. Sending your book to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo, or a paperback printer, where the file's structure and looks are judged: doc2epub. Plenty of authors use both — Calibre as the library shelf, doc2epub as the typesetter.
